Organisers of the Evesham Angling Festival are celebrating a new partnership for match fishing’s showpiece event, as the 2016 weekender looms large.

Hobgoblin – Wychwood Brewery’s flagship beer brand – has agreed to become title sponsor for The Hobgoblin Evesham Championship – the headline event of the Evesham Angling Festival.

Last year it was won with the aid of a big barbel for Andrew ‘Spud’ Murphy – pictured above. And all sorts of match-style tactics, plus a few more associated with specialist angling, will be used by talent matchmen.

The match – which invites 35 of the nation’s top anglers and pits them against 35 qualifiers – carries a top prize of £3,000 and kicks off the biggest spectator angling event in the calendar.

Beer brand Hobgoblin has been cheered for its supprt of the event that for many year was known at all as 'The John Smiths', due to its long association with Courage.

“Its great news,” said festival director Roger Mortimer. “Three years ago we added a beer and cider festival to the weekend’s attractions so getting a headliner from that field to support the angling action is a real coup.”

“This year’s event will see all the members of the England national sides taking part on a river that’s been fishing very well during the qualifying events.”

The brewery have agreed an initial one-match sponsorship package that will see winners walk away with samples of its legendary beer and commemorative Hobgoblin tankards as well as the cash and trophies.

It's a busy weekend ahead for Evesham action.
