STRANGE events have been reported on the River Thames with the discovery of a huge dead sturgeon (pictured here) and a 15 lb barbel in separate bin bags.

The 30-40 lb sturgeon, a highly unusual fish for the area, was found in a black bin bag in the car park of the wet play area of the swimming pool at Wallingford in Oxfordshire.

This was shortly followed by the barbel discovered in a clear bin bag along the river nearby.

Dilip Sarkar, national enforcement manager at the Angling Trust, said: “A member of the public found the sturgeon and alerted the authorities, then one of the members of the voluntary bailiff service on patrol found the barbel.

“The matter is under investigation so it wouldn’t be right to speculate on the cause at this time.

“Members of the service in fact found two guns in that area a few years ago but police have still not been able to solve that mystery,” he added.

At the time of going to Press, the under-staffed Environment Agency couldn’t provide Angler’s Mail with any update.
