ANGLERS fishing lakes at Surrey’s popular Newdigate Fishery were amongst those that felt a 2.7 magnitude earthquake.

The epicenter of the quake that occurred just after midday was around the quality day ticket fishing lakes, with reports of houses shaking and windows rattling.
Reported to be the first earthquake actually centred in Surrey since records began, Angler’s Mail features editor Richard Howard was at the fishing lakes complex at the time.
Richard said: “I thought someone behind me or an over eager dog had knocked into my lowchair, but when I turned around there was no one there.
“It was a pretty violent shake which came from the ground and spooked two or three big carp in front of me and properly rocked the water. It was a pretty calm day, so all the more obvious.
“I hadn’t visited this particular lake for a few years and whilst it’s not that far from Gatwick and the flight path, it was quiet and peaceful when it happened.
“I looked online later that day for earth tremors etc but couldn’t see anything, but I still couldn’t explain it. I felt another tremor very soon after.
“I’ve since found out it actually was an earthquake confirmed by the British Geological Survey with a magnitude of 2.7 and a ‘depth’ of 5 km. A number of local residents felt it in their homes.
“Thankfully it didn’t seem to upset the fish too much as I managed a 4 lb 12 oz golden orfe on waggler and maggot a couple of hours later.
“It wasn’t one of the big ones the fishing lakes are known for, but a very clean and welcome fish, all the same,” added Richard, who is the main reviewer of angling products for Angler’s Mail.
