The Essex angler told Angler’s Mail how he made his impressive catch, which starred recently in the magazine’s Richworth-sponsored Fish of the Week.

“I had another two doubles up to 18 lb just before the big ‘girl’,” said 25-year-old Finn, from Braintree.

“I hadn’t done any pre-baiting, I just set up in what I knew was a productive swim, and it fell to mackerel.

“It’s my fourth 20 lb-plus pike this winter,” concluded the carpenter, who struck at a secret lake.

Finn’s pike is one of the biggest predators of the season away from wonder water Chew Valley Lake in Somerset.

The biggest reported UK pike ever is the official British record of 46 lb 13 oz. It was caught by Roy Lewis on a big lure at Llandegfedd Reservoir in South Wales, way back in 1992.

The current English pike record was set more recently, in 2014, at 46 lb 11 oz. It fell to Wyndon Coole when he tackled North Yorkshire’s Wykeham Lakes. The fish has sadly died since then.
