Not quite a new gudgeon record - but quite a handful!

Kevin rocked the long-standing gudgeon record when he hauled the gigantic 4 oz ‘gonk’ from his local River Salwarpe.

It came from the Worcestershire venue at the very end of the river fishing season, not long before UK went into lockdown.

Bromsgrove-based Kevin told Angler’s Mail magazine: “It was a short evening session on the maggot feeder.

“I caught plenty of fish including perch, chub, dace and roach.

“I had a fair few gudgeon also but this one looked a lot bigger than the rest so I took a photo and put it into the keepnet.

“When releasing my catch I thought ‘I’ll weigh it’, and the scales read 4 oz.

“It wasn’t until I got home and Googled the British gudgeon record was 5 oz, I was made up.

“I got a measuring tape to sort of see what size it was, and I would say it was at least seven inches long.

“I’ve had some decent ones in the past from the same river but never really thought about weighing them.

This catch was so close to the gudgeon record.

“I didn’t weigh any of the other gudgeon that day but I would of estimated that a few of them were 2 oz or above, but none were anywhere near the size of this one.

“I had probably at least ten gudgeon that day, along with about a 20-30 small chub, dace and roach, and a few perch.

“I ended the session with a nice brace of roach,” added the 33-year-old plasterer.

The British gudgeon record listed on the official list was caught back in 1990. It fell to D Hull on the River Nadder at Sutton Mandeville, Wiltshire, and weighed 5 oz.
