HAVE you ever caught one of these, or any other rarely-caught coarse species?

The fish held by Jordan Grant is a bullhead, also known quaintly as a miller’s thumb.

Jordan’s surprise came on Derbyshire’s River Erewash at Pinxton, just before the end of the rivers season.

Of course, fishing everywhere is currently not possible due to lockdown restrictions.

The 24-year-old, a vehicle parts delivery driver, said: “I remember catching one of those bullheads back when I was really young and didn’t know what it was at the time.

“My bait was just simple double maggot on a size 16 hook tied to a free running small lead on a small 5.5 ft feeder rod casting to the bank, the total width of the river was only about 10 ft.

“I added ten chub to around the 2 lb mark – and that bullhead.”

The official British record bullhead – nicknamed the miller’s thumb – is 1 oz. It was caught in 1983 by R Johnson on the Green River, near Guildford in Surrey.

River fishing for coarse fish on rivers is currently scheduled to restart in England and Wales on June 16th. Hopefully that still happens…

Fishing on every water in Britain, for any species, is currently not happening due to the coronavirus lockdown measures.
