ONE of the country's top specimen anglers has put the heartbreak of having his tackle stolen behind him and got back on the trail of quality fish.

Matthew Fernandez took his four-year-old daughter, River, fishing as soon as anglers were allowed to travel to fish again. As you can see from the picture above, they caught some fine fish!
The pair are allowed to fish close to one another under the current lockdown rules, as they are from the same household.
Anglers from different households are advised by the Angling Trust to stay 15 metres apart when fishing, and the ‘standard’ social distancing 2 metre range at other times.
Matt, from Southampton, Hampshire, was heartbroken last year when his tackle was stolen from his car. Getting back on the banks has given him a welcome boost.

Matthew Fernandez shows one of his bigger crucians from the first session back with his daughter.
Matt and River both returned home smiling after landing plenty of quality crucians, tench and carp.
Matt told Angler’s Mail: “River and I headed to a quiet estate lake in search of ‘gold’.
“We fished a light pole float under the rod tip, positioned next to some pads. We fished at dead depth, as it enabled us to spot any slight movement.
“We presented a soft 6 mm Dynamite F1 Swim Stim Sweet Durable Hooker on the hook, and fed Frenzied Hempseed little and often.
“At first light, we were greeted by seven carp and eight tench. Crucians followed after 7am, and bites were steady throughout our session. Between us, we landed 20 crucians to 2 lb 8 oz.
“It was a much-needed trip outside, giving me a break from my dodgy home-schooling,” laughed Matthew.
He’s since been back out again since, fishing after big tench… with great success, as you’ll have hopefully seen in Angler’s Mail magazine.
Many more young anglers have been out by the water with their parents or relatives since lockdown was eased. We have some great tips for fishing with juniors – here.
