SHOCKING death has struck the tackle trade for a second time when tackle shop owner Carrie Izzard was found brutally stabbed in her own home in West End, Herstmonceaux, East Sussex.
Carrie, 48, jointly owned Battle Tackle in Ninfield Road, Sidbury, with her ex-partner Gerry Palmer, 50, who has subsequently been charged with her murder.
Gerry was found later that day at nearby fishery Wylands Angling Centre with injuries of his own and was taken for treatment to the Royal Sussex County Hospital, Brighton but was arrested immediately upon his discharge.
Gerry appeared at Hove Crown Court on 29 March charged with murder and was remanded in custody until the next hearing on 23 May. A trial date of 5 September was set aside. No plea was entered and no application for bail made.
It is understood that the couple had been living together until a few days previously but had separated. Carrie had only just posted on Facebook: “Exciting times ahead! Getting my life back on track and looking forward to the future!”
Tributes at tackle shop by family and friends
Carrie was a widow whose photographer husband, died a few years ago. Together they had run a local antiques’ business.
This was subsequently closed when Carrie took over Battle Tackle with her new partner Gerry.
A number of floral tributes were soon laid outside Battle Tackle after Carrie’s shocking death.
She had lived in her Georgian cottage in for about ten years. It is close to the well-known known 15th Century Herstmonsceaux Manor which was home to the Royal Observatory before it moved to Greenwich.
A neighbour who used to see her walking her dog said that she seemed very friendly and always said hello.
Carrie’s family has paid tribute to her in a statement saying: “Carrie was a much-loved daughter, sister and aunt who will be deeply missed.
“Her fun-loving ways and zest for life will live on in our memories.
“Her passing in such tragic circumstances will leave a big hole in the lives of her family and all those who knew her.”
- This tragedy follows on from the recent killing of Jackie Abbott in Dudley, West Midlands, by her husband Paul, who ran a tackle shop together. Abbott pleaded guilty to murder at Wolverhampton Crown Court and is currently awaiting final sentence, with the judge saying this was bound to be life imprisonment.
